About Language

My son identifies at  "Autistic" and our immediate family refer to him and others on the Autism Spectrum by adhering to Identity First Language. Very rarely will I produce content related to Autism which does not use the terms Neurodiverse people, Autistic people, or people on the spectrum. If you are neurodiverse, and you prefer Person First language when referencing or interviewing you in an article, please let me know. If you are a parent, and you and your spectrum loved one would prefer Person First language that is to say being called "a person with Autism" I will of course respect your wishes.

Lydia Brown also wrote a first rate article entitled The Significance of Semantics: Person-First Language: Why It Matters, Please click here to read it.

I am asking that readers respect our wish that our son be referred to as Autistic, and don't use the comment section to try and teach us about Person First language. Respect our understanding of what our son wants and presume he is competent enough to make that clear without verbal speech.

iPads for Autism
Also, in honor of my nonspeaking Autistic son, and all those like him who may benefit from these tablet devices, I'm recommending Shannon Des Roches Rosa's posts on iPads for Autism here.

Here is an additional link for those considering using an iPad as an Augmentative Alternative Communication (AAC) on Pinterest. It contains great accessories and other goodies to support the iPad/iPod/Tablet as an AAC device. The Pinterest boards were built by Lauren S. Enders, MA. CCC-SLP. Find them by clicking here

Terminology

I really appreciated Savannah Logsdon-Breakstone's blog post on Terminology. As you can see, I prefer not to reinvent when someone else has already created good content. Check out her post on terminology by clicking here:
